First Law International: Client-Driven Events

July 14th, 2020

On the 29th May 2020, participants from 65 countries joined together via Zoom call for First Law International’s Annual Spring Conference to discuss how the company was fairing during the Covid pandemic whilst laying out plans for future development. A series of client-driven virtual roundtables were held throughout the event to discuss their dealings with FLI, as well as the growing use of LegalTech both before and throughout the pandemic.

Positive client relations have always been a central focus for FLI and some of this years’ panellists had been working with the company for as long as 16 years. The diverse range of speakers represented companies such as Caterpillar, AVX (Kyocera), DHL, Royal Dutch Shell, Mediapro, Bjark Ingels Group and Vital Strategies, with each lending their voice and personal experiences to discussions of the pandemic and their expectations of continuing relations with FLI.

Each of the panellists expressed appreciation for FLI’s core business model and anticipation towards the company’s more member-focused direction. Projects such as the substantial development of in-house client ‘self-help’ and training tools were touched upon, which the speakers’ hoped would provide contract lifestyle management systems and business analytic software to its users. There was also a general emphasis on the increasingly crucial safeguarding of new technologies, for example, the complications of binding e-signatures and the growing need for secure VPNs.

The potential long-term effects of the Covid-19 pandemic were also discussed, centring around concerns over Cyber security, the potential risk that suppliers would impose more requirements and a predicted shift to advising clients on collections, bankruptcies and workouts. Issues of external security were also raised to help enforce social distancing rules, and each of the panellists expressed concern for how best to protect their staff and clients should there be a ‘second spike’.

Since the conference, General Counsels, and C-Suite Executives have been driving and coordinating multi-jurisdictional events through video-conferencing to coordinate due-diligence, M&A deals, compliance and regulatory forensic investigations, and export and trade optimisation and restructurings. Chief Business Development Officer, Daniel Casares-Lauritsen, said of the conference: “We are very excited to see the synergies between FLI HQ and our clients, as we move towards a new partnership era”.
